In 1961, the family moved to North Wales, where Barry attended St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Junior School and later Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School.
After relocating to Cape Town, South Africa, in 1969, he attended Observatory Boys (now Rhodes High School) until he left at age 15 to take up an apprenticeship at Joffe Electrical, which he completed in 1974.

Hilton married Sandra “Sandy” Hilton in 2007, after two previous marriages (to Janet McKirdy and Jane Tweedie).

Barry Hilton became a professional comedian in May 1983 when he first performed at a Holiday Inn in Port Elizabeth. Over the next decade, he became a fixture on the South African comedy circuit, performing in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and at the Wild Coast Sun and Sun City, and supported international acts like Billy Connolly and Bob Monkhouse.
By the early 2000s, he was selling out 4,000-seat venues nationwide and headlining at the London Comedy Store, Sydney Opera House, and international festivals across Asia.
